CJ Hurley Century Arts is currently interviewing students for our internship program. We are a Portland based design and fine art studio with a focus on historic homes. We work with local and national clients and specialize in the Architectural Reform Movements of Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, Aesthetic, and Art Deco.

We offer multiple internships each academic term, and work with students from local and national colleges and universities. Opportunities for our interns vary and are dependant on the client projects we have at the time. Interns are given the opportunity to interact with clients and industry professionals, and are encouraged to
participate in our studio projects.

Learning opportunities and possible projects include:

• Assist with the management of our Facebook account
• Creation of weekly digital newsletters using Constant Contact
• Online marketing of programs and events
• Assist with maintaining media tracking and advertising notebooks
• General office assistance and projects
• Participate in the day to day business and operations required for a creative design business

Compensation: This is a non-paid internship. Internships can be completed for academic credit. Students seeking professional work experience with no academic credit may also apply.

Work Schedule: Hours are flexible and based on the credit hour requirements of the individual academic program, but are agreed upon prior to the start of the internship. Students typically work 8-16 hours a week.

General Requirements: Qualified Candidates will be organized, attentive to detail, have strong written and verbal communication skills, be a creative thinker, and able to work independently and as a team player.

Job Specific Requirements: Qualified candidates must have exceptional social media knowledge and skills, must have excellent writing and grammar, and an ability to work in Adobe Photoshop. Experience with Constant Contact and InDesign is helpful. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is helpful. Ability to scan and
retouch images is required. General strength on the computer is essential.

All interested and qualified students or recent graduates are encouraged to apply.

Art Museum College Pass - Pick One of These Up Tomorrow

Join us in the Studio for our bi-monthly discussion series, Designs on Portland. This evening’s topic is Portland’s Memorial Coliseum – its past, present and future. The Memorial Coliseum, designed by legendary architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, has recently been the subject of great debate due to the potential for it to be razed and replaced by a baseball stadium. What is it that makes Memorial Coliseum an architectural gem? Surprise guests spanning the history of the building will present their views. Our discussion, moderated by journalist/blogger Brian Libby and architect Stuart Emmons (www.emmonsarchitects.com), will explore the various arguments for saving what many contend is an icon of Portland architecture worthy of preservation.

Art professor Michael Salter will take his Styrofoam creations and visual art to a new neighborhood this spring. Salter is living and working in Portland as an “Artist in Residence,” a partnership established by the South Waterfront Community Relations program and the UO’s Department of Art. Salter will also be teaching at the UO in Portland.

The Department of Art’s digital arts program has developed this new faculty residency with the UO in Portland and the South Waterfront Community Relations program. The South Waterfront 20/20 Art, Culture, and Science Committee, a resident committee in the neighborhood district, advised on the goals of the “Artist in Residence” program. Salter’s new residency coincides with his teaching in the bachelor of fine arts digital arts program at the White Stag Block.

The South Waterfront’s innovative architectural vision of an urban community provides these artists with live/work space in its soaring, LEED-certified glass towers. Digital arts professor, Michael Salter, whose work often employs recycled materials and is grounded in street culture, will spend his residency creating an artwork at South Waterfront and preparing for an exhibition in Brussels, Belgium. His residency demonstrates the university’s commitment to contribute to regional and global conversations in art, design, and sustainability.

Each term a new artist will live and create in the South Waterfront neighborhood while teaching at UO in Portland. Artists have access to a ground floor studio space and will host open events and studio hours for the neighborhood residents.

Northwest premiere of Handmade Nation, a new documentary now being presented to sold-out crowds across the country. Levine traveled 19,000 miles to create this first film documenting the indie craft movement—a new wave of craft marrying historical technique, punk culture, and the do-it-yourself ethos. A companion book, Handmade Nation: The Rise of DIY, Art, Craft and Design, is now available from Princeton Architectural Press.

A first-time film director, Levine is also a writer, crafter, saw player and independent curator based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She is the owner of Paper Boat Boutique & Gallery and a founder of Art vs. Craft, Milwaukee’s indie craft fair. Handmade Nation, the film, is a labor of love mainly financed by credit cards.

On April 4, the Museum will host an entire day of related programs, including a panel discussion and a hands-on crochet-a-thon with Mandy Greer.

Digital Arts BFA Makes the Cut and Paste

Dominic Cardoso, a Digital Arts BFA student at the university's White Stag Block in Portland, will compete against other Portland talent in a national digital design competition called "Cut and Paste." The competition pits 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, and motion designers against one another in timed bouts, the winner in each city competition moving on to the grand finale in New York. This year Cut and Paste becomes a global tournament with elimination rounds in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Amsterdam, London, Milan, Hong Kong, Tokyo and 8 other cities. Winners receive gifts ranging from travel to software to high-priced electronics.

Cardoso will burn up the screens at the Portland Art Museum on Saturday, March 7th starting at 7pm. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door. More information at the Cut and Paste Portland website.

COLABORATORY takes place over 6 weeks in Portland, Oregon. 10 participants are selected and individually paired with 3 of the 10 agencies based on their strengths and interests. Interns spend 2 intensely focused weeks at each agency learning from all disciplines.

During the 6 weeks working at agencies across Portland, Interns also form 2 competing teams to develop a campaign pitch for local (and we think pretty friggin’ cool) client. All we’ll say is it’s not Nike. There are other cool businesses in Portland, you know.

The 2 sides of COLABORATORY give Interns a broad view of how agencies work, and at the same time let them learn how to collaborate. Innovative marketing comes from people working together to synthesize new ideas and test them out. COLABORATORY is where that happens.

WE WANT ROCKSTARS. That is, students with exceptional skills and interests in writing, design, interactive, multimedia, account management, production, strategy, public relations and … kicking ass.

From Salter: its not really about skateboarding, specifically, but about the time and space that skateboarding has always invited for art and design to play and exist together. I have taken 8 people who understand the power and responsibility of the image, and directed them to design and develop a skate deck and apparel company. Together we built an idea in to a reality. Our idea is called PROJECT, a fairly ambiguous name except for its obvious definition of our task; Conceive, design, fabricate, deliver. Within this company are 7 lines of goods, none of which isn't frosted with irony, humor and beauty.

IDSA 3BY10 Event at White Stag

Because we're extra-capable intellectuals here at the White Stag, we also hosted the inaugural 3BY10 event last Wednesday, put together by the local chapter of the Industrial Designers Society of America. So named because 3 designers talk for 10 minutes each about a certain project or theme, the first speaker was one of our own, Daniel Strong, who went through the design process for his "Clear Deer." It was a great event and a shout-out goes to Daniel for going first.

A great time was had by all at the opening and the beautiful photos will stay up in the White Stag 1st floor lobby through this month.
